Margaret’s basement floor drain started gurgling last October, every time the washing machine emptied. Her son lives two hours away, and on Sunday calls he heard it as one more old house noise rather than a reason to ask a plumber st louis mo to run a camera down the line. By February, sewage was standing on the basement floor of her 1940s brick bungalow in south St. Louis. The point of this story is blunt: a gurgling drain is a diagnosable fault with a name and a price, and finding that name early costs a fraction of cleaning up after it.

A Gurgling Floor Drain Is Never Just Air

Gurgling is air. Water backing up behind a partial blockage pulls air through the nearest trap, and in most older St. Louis houses the nearest trap is that basement floor drain. Laundry is what exposes it, because a washer dumps thirty or forty gallons in about ninety seconds and a half-blocked lateral cannot move that much water that fast. Job after job on these blocks, what turns up is the same thing: a clay lateral laid before 1950, with roots working into one joint.

If sewage does reach the floor, the response is not negotiable. Keep people and pets out of standing sewage, stop running water anywhere in the house until the line is clear, and throw out carpet, padding, drywall and cardboard that soaked it up instead of trying to clean them. That last rule sounds wasteful until you read the EPA’s answers on sanitary sewer overflows, which list what is riding in that water: bacteria, viruses, protozoa, helminths (intestinal worms), and molds and fungi.

Distance Turns Small Symptoms Into Emergencies

Nobody here was careless. A parent describing a noise on the phone is filing a report, while an adult child two hours away hears a description, and that gap is what stretches four months into an emergency call. (He tells the story now, mostly so other people call sooner.) Money is the other half of the gap: AZ Big Media reported in April 2026 that sewer line replacement typically runs upward of $10,000, and a family that has never priced the work assumes every call ends there.

Distance was never the problem. Delay was.

One Camera Inspection Named The Real Fault

The camera went in on a Tuesday morning, same day as the call, at no charge. Sixty-two feet out, under the front yard, the picture showed a collapsed section of clay pipe with a root mass sitting inside it. A camera inspection turns a household noise into a named fault with a length, a depth and a number attached. Ten years ago that diagnosis meant a backhoe, a trench across the lawn and a resodding bill nobody had budgeted for. Today the same fault is often repaired by pulling a resin liner through the existing pipe from one small access point, and this family’s repair landed near $5,000 rather than the full replacement they had braced for.

Questions That Got This Family A Straight Answer

Three phone calls produced three different stories, which is normal and not a scandal. What separated the company they hired was that it answered in specifics before it quoted anything. Ask these four, and listen for numbers instead of reassurance.

    • Will you camera the line before you quote, and does that inspection cost me anything? A good answer is yes to the camera and no to the fee.
    • How far out is the fault, and can you mark it on the ground? A straight answer names a distance in feet and a spot in the yard.
    • Is this a spot repair, a liner or a full replacement, and what would change the answer? Listen for a technician who explains what pushes it from one to the next.
    • What is the written price, and what happens if you open the ground and find something worse? A good answer covers the change order before any digging starts.

Acting On The First Sound Costs Less

The bill for a planned repair and the bill for an emergency are not the same bill, and the difference is measured mostly in the weeks between the first gurgle and the first phone call. Margaret’s house had been saying so since October. If you are the one two hours away, the useful move is not typing plumber st louis mo into your phone at midnight while a shop vac runs behind you; it is asking on an ordinary Sunday what the drains have been doing lately, then getting a camera in the line while the answer is still only a noise.
